Barcode lookup MCP server
Let Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client look up products by UPC, EAN, GTIN or ISBN. It is the same data as the API, 500M+ barcodes, and it works on the free plan.
https://barcodereport.com/api/mcp
Remote server, Streamable HTTP transport. Get a free API key first.
Set it up in two minutes
- Get an API key. Create a free account (100 lookups a month, no card) and copy the key from your dashboard.
- Add the server to your assistant with one of the snippets below, replacing
YOUR_KEY. - Ask about a product. For example: "What is 049000050103?" or "Here are 40 UPCs from my inventory export. Give me the title and brand for each."
Claude (web and desktop app)
Open Settings, then Connectors, and add a custom connector with this URL. Claude only asks for a URL, so the key goes in it:
https://barcodereport.com/api/mcp?api_key=YOUR_KEYClaude Code
claude mcp add --transport http barcodereport https://barcodereport.com/api/mcp \
--header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY"Cursor
In ~/.cursor/mcp.json (or .cursor/mcp.json in a project):
{
"mcpServers": {
"barcodereport": {
"url": "https://barcodereport.com/api/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_KEY" }
}
}
}VS Code (Copilot agent mode)
In .vscode/mcp.json:
{
"servers": {
"barcodereport": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://barcodereport.com/api/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_KEY" }
}
}
}ChatGPT
With developer mode turned on in ChatGPT's connector settings, create a connector with the URL below and no authentication:
https://barcodereport.com/api/mcp?api_key=YOUR_KEYClients that only run local servers
Bridge to the remote server with mcp-remote, for example in Claude Desktop's claude_desktop_config.json:
{
"mcpServers": {
"barcodereport": {
"command": "npx",
"args": ["-y", "mcp-remote", "https://barcodereport.com/api/mcp",
"--header", "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_KEY"]
}
}
}Tools
lookup_barcode | One UPC-A, UPC-E, EAN-13, EAN-8, GTIN-14 or ISBN. Returns the title and, where we have them, brand, category, description, image, price and identifiers. One lookup. |
|---|---|
lookup_barcodes | Up to 100 codes in one call. One lookup per distinct code; if the batch would go over your allowance, nothing is charged. |
search_products | Find products by name, brand or category when you don't have the barcode. One lookup per search. |
get_usage | Your plan, allowance, usage and reset date. Free. |
Tool results leave out empty fields to save the assistant's context, and say how many lookups you have left. A code we don't have is reported as not found rather than as an error, and it still counts as a lookup. Rate limits are the same as the API's.
Prefer plain HTTP?
The same lookups are available from the REST API, with an OpenAPI spec and a Postman collection. For spreadsheets there is a Google Sheets function.
MCP server FAQ
Is the MCP server free?
Yes, it uses your Barcode Report API key, and a free key includes 100 lookups a month. Each code looked up uses one lookup, the same as the REST API; checking your usage is free. Paid plans start at $24.95 a month for 10,000 lookups.
Which AI assistants work with it?
Any MCP client that supports remote servers over Streamable HTTP, including Claude (web, desktop and Claude Code), ChatGPT in developer mode, Cursor and VS Code. Clients that only run local servers can reach it through mcp-remote.
Does a barcode that is not found still count?
Yes. The search runs either way, so a miss uses one lookup, just as it does in the API. The tool result says when a code was not found and how many lookups are left.
Is it safe to put my API key in the server URL?
The key in the URL is only stored in your own client settings, and our logs strip it. If your client can send headers, use an Authorization: Bearer header instead. You can rotate the key from your dashboard at any time.
Can the assistant change anything in my account?
No. All four tools are read-only: they look up products, search, or report usage. They cannot change your plan, billing or key.
